New direct rail service between London and Blackpool confirmed

The Grand Central railway franchise has confirmed it will run a new route from Blackpool to London from Spring 2020.

The new service is expected to give a significant boost to the economy in the region as the business and leisure events sector continues to expand.

Grand Central will operate up to five new direct rail services each day between Blackpool North and London Euston.

Speaking to CN, Cllr Gillian Campbell, Blackpool Council Deputy Leader, said: “We welcome Grand Central’s plan to operate up to five new direct services between Blackpool and London.

“Trains running from the capital every day including Sundays will undoubtedly contribute to making Blackpool even more accessible for conference delegates and business travellers heading into the resort.

“The fact that the services will launch in the spring of 2020 in the same year that Blackpool’s new £25m Conference and Exhibition Centre is set to open is also great news.

“The added connectivity between London Euston and Blackpool North will make our major new Conference and Exhibition venue an even more attractive proposition for event organisers.”

In December 2018, Visit Blackpool launched a new business tourism advocacy and ambassador recruitment programme, aligned to the town’s new conference & exhibition Centre.

In addition to promoting the £25m facility, which is set to officially open next year as part of the existing Winter Gardens complex, the initiative will also look to raise awareness of the £500m of recent investments which are transforming the resort.

These include several new hotels, a tramway extension, public transport interchange and newly electrified rail connections. Other regeneration projects include major improvements to roads, bridges and traffic management schemes, and the development of new cultural, retail and leisure zones across the town.
