Tomorrow people

Name: Olivia Unsworth

Job title: Junior event manager

Length of service: Eight months

Previous job: Digital marketing. Also work experience in a travel and events agency.

Why did you want to come into the meetings industry

My sister is in the industry, so hearing her stories and helping her out first sparked my interest.

I then did work experience in the marketing department of a travel and events agency. I love to travel, so having a job that allows me to do this is great.

What do you most enjoy about your job

Seeing different places and cultures and meeting a lot of people.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years

In a much more senior role within the events industry. I’d love to be organising an array of events that allow my personality to come through and show off my creativity.

Name: Kelly Stevens

Job title: Conference planning executive

Length of service at Venues and Events International: One year

Previous job: In Spain working in client/leisure relations. I’d moved to experience the different way of life. It was an invaluable experience.

Why did you come into the industry?

I’d had a taste of the events industry while abroad, but didn’t feel Spain offered much of a variety within this sector, unless you are fluent in Spanish. The cost of living was also much lower than in the UK and the salaries reflected this. This led to me moving back to the UK to begin my career.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

Each day is different; you never know what you could find yourself working on. Events range from day meetings, to larger conferences and away-days, to parties or incentives, with everything else in between.

I also love how friendly and sociable the industry can be, from interacting with my clients on a daily basis to liaising with hotels and venues, to sourcing the unique and wonderful venues suitable for my clients.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I would love to be in the same industry with 10 years’ experience under my belt. I’m keen to continue improving my knowledge and working my way up.

Name: Kayley Westall

Job title: Conference planning executive

Length of service: Started in February 2017 and have loved every minute.

Previous job: This is my first role within the industry.

Why did you come into the industry?

I thought the job role would suit me well – you have to be very organised and efficient, but you also get to be really consultative and build great relationships.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

No day is the same and we have great opportunities to meet many clients and suppliers and experience lovely venues, to help build the knowledge we need to ensure we’re giving the best service.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Still in the meeting and events industry, but with much more knowledge of the industry as a whole. I’ll hopefully have a lot of opportunities to see different venues and build up my product knowledge.
