The Art of Being: Rhiannon Lambert

Searcys at The Gherkin has partnered with Harley Street nutritionist and bestselling author Rhiannon Lambert, to celebrate The Art of Being across their conference and events packages. 

As part of an ongoing health and wellness campaign across their venues, the historic restaurateur and catering company have joined forces with Rhiannon to host a supper club and Q&A advising delegates and event organisers on how to stay healthy during those busy working hours.

Here, Rhiannon gives her tips to staying healthy while attending conferences and events.

 

Staying healthy at conferences and events

Activity level dramatically alters what kind of nutrition you need to be following. I think workplace environments should be supporting staff with healthy and energising options with fibre like fruit and nuts.

With all meeting packages for the private dining rooms at The Gherkin, Searcys have followed through with their 2019 pledge to offer a complimentary bowl of signature English apples, a healthier pick-me-up than regular office snacks or yet more coffee.

Fuelling your body with the right nutrients prior to and during a long day of work will give you the energy and strength you need to perform better. Activity level dramatically alters what kind of nutrition you need to be following. What works for someone who works out twice a day isn’t going to work for those who train twice a week.

Whilst drinks themselves cannot improve mood as such, there are drinks with health benefits, which in turn will leave you feeling revived. For example there are drinks that are great for digestion, such as a fresh mint tea. A natural ginger-based drink is a good addition, and perhaps even a kombucha or some keffir. 

Ultimately, hydration is the cornerstone to good health, so having plenty of drinking water available throughout the day is key. Estimates suggest the average Briton drinks less than 1 glass of water per day, meaning most of us aren’t drinking nearly enough.

Sleep also plays a vital role in good health and well-being throughout your life. In fact, it is just as important as eating healthy and exercising, and research shows those who sleep less than 5 hours a day tend to weigh significantly more than those who get adequate sleep.

 

Food trends and events

When dining out and hosting clients, sticking to your health drive can be an extra challenge. When you’re eating out, I suggest either grilled lean fish or meat as a good option. 

Opt for slow-release wholegrain carbohydrates like brown rice, buckwheat, sweet potato, rye bread, spelt and so on. Make sure you get your healthy fats in (nuts, avocado, oily fish, seeds etc.) so you don’t go back to the office and end up snacking and if you do, have a fibre rich snack like a piece of fruit on you. And with dessert, I love something with stewed fruit and natural sugars at this time of year.

A well-balanced plate draws attention to fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, so eating a plant-based diet can provide all the nutrients needed for long-term good health. Take into account your daily energy requirements and, in doing so, you’ll start listening to your body.

Finally, keeping healthy while hosting and attending corporate events follows through to your drinks options as well. When it comes to alcohol it’s important to remember there is no one healthy alcohol, however, you can pick lighter options lower in calories and a tad easier on the stomach.
