Diet and mental health conference provides food for thought
More than 60 dieticians, mental health specialists and NHS clinicians came together at the James Graham building, in Headingley, for a conference themed as Dietitians do Prevention in Mental Health Service and Learning Disabilities.
The two-day event (11-12 June) hosted by Well Met, the conference department for Leeds Beckett University, looked at the future of the workforce and the role of dieticians and how they can make a difference in a healthcare setting. Keynote speaker and chair of the British Dietary Association, Sian O’ Shea kicked off proceedings focussing on dieticians leading on prevention.
Media Dietitian Anna Daniels advised delegates on how they can expand their role as practitioners to support evidence based nutritional advice in the media.
Anne Webster, of NHS England, talked about supporting dietitians working in Learning and Development to reduce the use of medication. An update on compassion-focussed therapies informed practitioners of how they could expand their skills. Day two centred on research and several graduates from Leeds Beckett presented their research.
Organiser, Sarah Elder of the Tees, Esk and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We’ve used Well Met a number of times for the Mental Health Specialist Group Conferences and they have been great supporting us. The James Graham building in Headingley is such an easy and convenient location and we’ve had great feedback from delegates about the space, and general running of the event.”
