CN meets the agency sales manager at Butlin’s Conference & Events
One of the reasons I love my job is the variety that each day brings. Being in a field-based role and being responsible for promoting multiple resorts means that I get to travel the length and breadth of the country while meeting a huge range of interesting people. My suitcase is always half packed ready to go!
Home for me is the beautiful Derbyshire countryside, right on the tip of the Peak District.
Being based in the Midlands means I jump at the chance to see the sea at our resorts.
The majority of my time is spent promoting what Butlin’s has to offer in terms of large-scale event space.
The biggest challenge, and also one of the most rewarding aspects of my job, is changing people’s pre-conceived perceptions of Butlin’s. Butlin’s has gone through a massive period of investment and re-brand over the last 15 years.
When I am not out on the road, I split my time between our support centre in Hemel Hempstead and our three Resorts located in Bognor Regis, Minehead and Skegness. One site visit can take half a day due to the size of our resorts. Bognor Regis plays host to three hotels, a conference centre and seven restaurants, before we even start to show a client some of our more unique event spaces and outdoor activity offering. Flat shoes are a must in my role!
I try and spend one day a week in our support centre. I am also currently involved in writing some award submissions.
As our resorts are now open for the summer season, I am designing a programme of familiarity trips for our clients and agents. It is so important for people to experience our facilities first hand. This is vital for us to be able to change people’s perceptions of Butlin’s and see us as leaders in the field of hospitality.
A typical work day for me will start by checking my emails and daily reports. I will look at what new enquiries have come through. I will offer my support with proposal writing, chases and conversion. I will identify where we have long standing enquiries on hold and will make some calls to gain feedback, offer added value, negotiate on rates or arrange a site visit for the client to visit the resort in question. I have just confirmed a site visit at Bognor Regis for next week for an event for 200 delegates over three days in January 2019.
Since 1936, the Butlin’s motto has been ‘Our True Intent is all for your Delight’ and this is still integral to how we look after our guests and clients today.
I will try and end each week with a day working from home and prepare for the following week’s meetings and appointments. These days also enable me to update the rest of the team on key activity and highlights of my week.
A day off the road is always welcome by that stage, ready to re-charge my batteries and unwind for the weekend ahead. After a day on the road I like to unwind by spending time at the gym. I am a bit of a gym bunny and attend as many Les Mills classes as I can including Body Spin, Body Attack, Body Pump and Body Step. With a lot of my time spent in the car, along with the amount of fine food and wine that is enjoyed within our industry, exercise is a really important part of my weekly routine.
