ATPI’s Rising Stars programme, one year on

Katie Skitterall, head of UK operations, e-commerce and corporate events at ATPI, describes the development of the event agency’s Rising Stars employee mentoring programme launched last year.

Candidates are required to undergo a competitive application process, involving an essay-style submission detailing their suitability for the programme, the results they wish to achieve and their commitment to their personal development.

From the 30 applications received, ATPI’s senior members of staff selected eight candidates in 2017, based on the highest overall scores, to participate in the programme.

ATPI’s 2017 Rising Stars included:

  • Stevie-Leigh Harrison, e-Commerce account/product executive
  • Kelly Chatters, e-Commerce account/product executive
  • Taylor Coombes, senior business travel consultant
  • Jessica Alger, business travel consultant
  • Angela Jackson, team leader
  • Carla Barnard, operations manager, Energy
  • Rachel Brown, head of operations, Lowestoft
  • Jean Matellis, team leader

The programme is tailored specifically for each individual to help them achieve their personal career goals. A year-long course is then built accordingly. Regular evaluation is carried out and a variety of activities was organised for 2017’s cohort to better understand the breadth of the ATPI business globally. These included group training sessions, accompanying mentors in meetings, and shadowing colleagues in departments of their choice to gain insight into the necessary skill set required for specific roles.

The programme offered a hands-on approach to learning and provided exposure among senior figures in the business, with the stars being tasked with organising the bi-annual UK conference.

As an added bonus, ATPI invited a number of the Rising Stars on a three-day trip to its Mumbai office to demonstrate the scale of a global business.

The Rising Stars of 2017 have progressed significantly in the last year and all have successfully moved into different positions or have been promoted to a more senior role within their department.

The programme has received excellent feedback from the stars and ATPI will be continuing to show its commitment to nurturing talent with the launch of the 2018 programme this September.
